Overview

Tackle Kilimanjaro via the scenic Machame Route, known as the "Whiskey Route." This challenging path offers stunning views, diverse landscapes, and higher success rates for reaching Uhuru Peak through proper acclimatization.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and pre-climb briefing day

dinner

Today is an arrival day with no planned activities. You should aim to arrive at your base lodge in time for your pre-climb briefing with your mountain guide (time to be confirmed). This session will cover important details about your trek on Mount Kilimanjaro, including equipment checks, safety procedures, and the itinerary for the days ahead.

Day 2: Day 2: Moshi town to Machame gate to Machame camp

breakfast, lunch, dinner

You will depart by road from Moshi at 9:00 a.m. and travel to Machame Gate. After completing the registration process, you will begin your trek through the rainforest zone accompanied by your guide. The forest is dense and rich in diverse flora and fauna. Rain is common in this area during the afternoon, so the trail may become slightly slippery. A steady, moderately steep hike will take you to the edge of the rainforest and into the heather zone.

Day 3: Machame camp to Shira camp

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Today’s hike is slightly shorter and begins with a trek through the heather and moorland zone, ascending a steep ridge toward the semi-circular cliff known as Picnic Rock. From here, weather permitting, you will enjoy excellent views of Kibo Peak — the highest cone of Mount Kilimanjaro and home to your ultimate goal, Uhuru Peak. You may also see the rugged peaks of the Shira Plateau to the west. Shira is the third volcanic cone of Kilimanjaro, shaped over time by lava flows, erosion, and volcanic activity. In the distance, you may catch sight of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, standing at 4,563 meters (14,970 feet). The remainder of the day follows a gentler, more gradual trail toward camp, where equally spectacular views await.

Day 4: Shira camp to Moir hut camp

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Today you will maintain a steady pace across the alpine desert toward the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. If your fitness and acclimatization levels are good, there is an optional detour via Lava Tower, which offers an excellent opportunity for acclimatization at higher altitude. Tonight’s destination is Moir Hut, a relatively isolated camp most commonly used by trekkers on the Northern Circuit route. The camp provides unique northern views of the impressive Kibo Cone. From Moir Hut, you may also choose to take an optional hike to the nearby Lent Hills, where eroded volcanic cones and ridges create dramatic scenery. On a clear day, you may even be able to look northward across the wilderness plains of Kenya.

Day 5: Moir camp to Lava Tower to Barranco camp

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Today’s hike takes you southward once again toward the massive Kibo Cone, steadily ascending across the alpine desert to reach Lava Tower at 4,630 meters (15,190 feet), if you did not already visit this point the previous day. This stage is an important part of acclimatization and provides a good opportunity to assess how your body responds to higher altitude. From Lava Tower, the trail descends steeply in an anti-clockwise direction around Kibo and into the scenic Barranco Valley. Along the way, you will pass the giant flowering groundsels, commonly known as Kilimanjaro Senecios, which are unique to Mount Kilimanjaro and thrive in this harsh alpine environment. The day ends at Barranco Camp, located at roughly the same elevation as where you began, on the edge of the heather and moorland zone.

Day 6: Barranco camp to Karanga camp

breakfast, lunch, dinner

This morning you will depart from Barranco Camp and begin the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. This impressive non-technical scramble offers the exciting feel of mountaineering without requiring prior climbing experience or specialized equipment. Reaching the top rewards you with superb views back toward camp and across to the Heim Glacier near the summit. The trek then continues through the alpine desert, gradually winding around the mountain toward the Karanga Valley. You will descend into the valley before making a final climb up to camp. Karanga Valley marks the last reliable water point on the route before the summit ascent.

Day 7: Karanga camp to Barafu Camp

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Today’s trek follows a gradual ascent through the stark and open landscape of the alpine desert. Although the trail is not especially steep, you will maintain a slow and steady pace to aid acclimatization as you continue toward the base of Kibo Cone. As you progress higher, you may finally catch sight of Mawenzi Peak, the second-highest peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, rising dramatically to the east. Because today’s distance is relatively short, you will have ample time to rest at your summit camp and prepare for tonight’s summit attempt toward Uhuru Peak.

Day 8: Barafu Camp to Stella point to Uhuru peak to Mweka camp

breakfast, lunch, dinner

In the early hours of the morning, around midnight, you will leave Barafu Camp and begin your final ascent through the arctic zone toward the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The climb is steep and demanding, following a slow zig-zag trail over loose volcanic scree in the cold darkness of the night. Your first major stop is Stella Point at 5,685 meters (18,650 feet), located on the rim of the Kibo crater. From here, a shorter but still challenging ascent leads you to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), the highest point in Africa. Due to the extreme altitude and cold conditions, time at the summit is usually brief before beginning the descent back to base camp for breakfast or brunch. After packing your gear, you will continue descending through the alpine desert, then the heather and moorland zones, eventually reaching Mweka Camp in the rainforest zone for a well-earned rest.
